GE Energy Announces Digital Cellular Metering Technology for Utilities

GE Energy announced the availability of its proven polyphase metering platform equipped with digital cellular technology to help utilities meet the ruling from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) that wireless carriers will no longer be required to support the analog network (AMPS).

Advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) solutions with digital cellular technology, like GE’s new kV2c+ with Trilliant’s CellReader™ Communications, provide faster and more reliable data transmission capability than traditional analog modes. GE’s new meter can be used by GSM (global system for mobile communications) and CDMA public networks. It can also be used on Motorola private and Sprint/Nextel public iDEN networks, supporting over-the-air switching between the public Nextel and Motorola Private Harmony systems.

Some key characteristics of the kV2c+ meter with Trilliant’s CellReader include:

  • On demand, two-way AMI communications, factory installed under the cover of the kV2c+
  • Full GE Energy MeterMate™ support
  • Direct communication with MV-90 meter data collection and processing application
  • Ability to operate on any public North American network, such as Verizon Wireless, Bell Mobility, Telus Mobility, Sprint PCS, Rogers Wireless, T-Mobile, ATT Wireless and Motorola private and Sprint/Nextel public iDEN.

Trilliant’s CellReader products were the industry’s first “underglass” standards-compliant two-way advanced meter communications products for commercial electric meters and advanced gas meter instruments. These devices deliver time-sensitive energy data at nearly any time, supporting the growing need for advanced rates (e.g. real-time pricing) and demand response.

GE Energy’s kV2c+ meters provide efficient revenue metering, real-time instrumentation, high-quality power monitoring and cost-effective service measurements. Configurations can meet a wide range of metering requirements from metering energy rates and collecting critical quality of service to collecting load analysis information.
