As a result, many utilities are no longer viewing AMI as a standalone metering system.

The conversation has shifted from endpoints and meter reads to broader operational outcomes and long-term flexibility. Modern AMI investments are increasingly expected to support current needs while enabling future applications that may not yet be fully defined.

Infrastructure decisions made today may remain in place for the next 15 to 20 years. During that same time, technologies, regulations, customer expectations, and grid requirements will continue to evolve.
